Our story is your story
Founded in 1952, San Mateo Credit Union remains committed to helping members achieve financial health. This simple mission has allowed us to grow—our asset size now exceeds $1 billion and we're home to more than 90,000 members—but we will never outgrow that purpose. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in San Mateo County, the City of Palo Alto and certain areas of San Francisco.
“Not for profit, not for charity, but for service”
“People helping people”
Financial wellness for all members
San Mateo Credit Union believes a healthy financial life helps our members lead healthier overall lives. We're committed to helping our members make smart decisions, take advantage of life's big opportunities, and plan for the future.
In working towards those goals, our professionals take the time to build genuine relationships with members. When something happens in a member's life, good or bad, we are a trusted resource that can help navigate the financial aspects of the situation. We believe the value of people as people, not people as transactions.
As part of our financial wellness commitment, we host a wide variety of workshops and seminars on topics like money management, budgeting, understanding credit, and safeguarding against identity theft. We love helping our community though these efforts.
Advantages compared to banks
Unlike banks, SMCU is owned by its members. That means we reinvest our profits in things that benefit our members directly. Banks, on the other hand, are owned by shareholders, and the main idea of the bank is to profit as much as possible to enrich the shareholders.
How do we return value to our members? Well, we're often able to provide loans at lower rates, savings accounts with higher dividends, the lowest possible fees, and many free services. We also place particular emphasis on safeguarding your privacy at all times, and never sell our members' information.
Other advantages include:
- SMCU members get to vote in board elections and big decisions.
- We're community based, where many banks, especially big ones, don't really have a special relationship with their service area.
- Your deposits are insured to the same level as banks ($250,000).
Serving communities in San Mateo County and on the peninsula, SMCU has 7 convenient branch locations and over 40 ATMs throughout these areas.
