Step 3: Increase your financial knowledge and stability. 
  1. Attend a workshop or seminar: These informative, free classes are typically held either on-site at your organization or at SMCU's headquarters. Topics inlcude first-time home buying, building credit, identity theft, budgeting and saving, planning for retirement, and more. Check with your Human Resources team to see when SMCU is scheduled for our next on-site event, or you can send us an email to find out what's coming up.
  2. Learn online, anytime: SMCU offers 25+ online financial education courses across a wide variety of topics. These interactive courses take 10-20 minutes each and work well on your desktop or mobile, so you can take them anywhere at any time. 
  3. Get one-on-one financial coaching: The Financial Wellness Team at SMCU provides two great consulation options. One of our coaches can meet with you on-site or over the phone to discuss your individual financial challenges and goals (email us for an appointment). Or you can take advantage of our award-winning partner BALANCE, a local non-profit that provides comprehensive money management solutions and debt counseling.

Frequently Asked Questions
You will need the following information and documents to complete an application online or at a branch:
  • A social security number, VISA, Individual Tax ID number (ITIN and VISA holders will need to visit a branch to open an account) for each applicant.
  • Physical address for each individual’s residence, and, if different, the individual’s mailing address and proof of residence i.e: utility bill, transcript, pay stub
  • 2 forms of ID: One government photo ID i.e: Driver’s license, passport, matricula card AND a second non-photo ID e.g.: library card, debit or credit card, or student ID.
If you are a County of San Mateo employee, please contact your department's payroll specialist for the County's direct deposit payroll authorization form. We are happy to help complete the form with your new account number and SMCU routing number by contacting us at [email protected].

Beyond the seven Peninsula branches, SMCU offers Online Banking, a Mobile Banking app for iPhone and Android, and free access to over 30,000 ATMs nationwide through the CO-OP network.
There is no membership fee to join SMCU, but you must deposit and keep at least one dollar ($1) in your regular savings account at all times. Additional deposit accounts each have their own minimum opening deposit amounts:
  • Free Checking: $20
  • Premium Checking: $50
  • Regular Certificates (CDs): $1,000 (in most cases)
  • Money Market Account: $2,500

Verification of current employment or association with this organization is required either at at the time of application or prior to the opening/funding of the loan or account. Special offers are current as of 5/17/19 and may change or be discontinued at any time without notice. 1. $50 New Membership + Checking Bonus is available to new members who join SMCU and open a new checking account on the same date. Must be age 18 or older. Limit one bonus per membership (primary member). Bonus will be credited at the time of account opening in membership is opened at an SMCU branch or within 45 days after account opening if the membership is opened online.

2. The 0.25% auto loan rate discount will be applied at the time of funding if your promotional code is provided on the application. You can also receive the 0.25% auto loan rate discount for setting up an automatic loan payment, establishing and maintaining a Partner or Preferred member relationship tier level, purchasing a vehicle through SMCU's personal auto shopper, or the redemption of credit card points toward the loan discount. Only one 0.25% discount can be applied, and no discount(s) can cause your rate to fall lower than the stated “floor rate”. All loans are subject to credit, income, and debt verification as well as final underwriting approval. 

3. All loans are subject to credit approval. Appraisal credit covers appraisal costs up to $800 when you close your home loan with San Mateo Credit Union (SMCU) by 1/31/22. Loans offered on condition of credit and underwriting approval. This offer cannot be combined with any other SMCU mortgage promotions, cannot be redeemed for cash, and is non-transferable. Present appraisal gift certificate (obtain from [email protected]) with your completed residential mortgage application. Your appraisal fee will be collected at the time of your appraisal and credited back to you upon successful close of escrow. Loans offered on condition of credit and underwriting approval. 4. APR = Annual Percentage Rate. Offer applies to the SMCU Visa Signature Credit Card only. Introductory rate applies for 12 billing cycles on all purchases and balance transfers; cash advances are excluded. After the introductory rate expires, your rate will return to the stated variable rate as outlined in your loan agreement. All loans are subject to credit, income, and debt verification as well as final underwriting approval. 

5. The 90-day time-frame for CURewards Points Introductory special offers begin on the date the card is issued. Must make the required dollar value in purchases during the 90-day timeframe to be eligible for the reward.
