SMCU Giving Statement
As a trusted community financial institution that has been serving the Peninsula for over 65 years, SMCU is dedicated to supporting local organizations and efforts that improve the quality of life and financial well-being for San Mateo County residents. We invest in our communities through financial education, scholarships, grants, sponsorship, in-kind donations, volunteerism, and leadership support to non-profit organizations. With our roots serving County of San Mateo employees, priority is given to County of San Mateo initiatives and efforts that serve our students and underbanked residents within our communities.
As the community leader in financial education, we strive to improve the overall financial wellness of our members and the communities we serve. We provide resources and grants that expand access to financial services, improve financial stability through low-cost products and services, and expand financial knowledge.
SMCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative that is committed to supporting non-profits and efforts that contribute to building stronger communities where our members and employees live and work.
The best way to ensure we’re meeting these commitments is through thoughtful and balanced planning. We create our community giving plan in the autumn each year for implementation the following year. While we consider requests for support throughout the year, the majority of efforts and support are determined during our planning process. We will evaluate each request carefully, giving preference to those that meet at least one of the following:
- Provides access to local, affordable educational and cultural events for families in our community
- Provides financial literacy and SMCU scholarships to community members, employees, and students
- Supports affordable housing and education
- Benefits non-profit organizations where our members reside
